Heart disease deaths

Thursday, 01 May 2008 12:11
Deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) in younger women have been falling but new research warns this decline could be slowing down.

CHD rates in England and Wales were high and reasonably steady until the mid 1970s when they began to fall.

Heart and circulatory disease are the UK's biggest killer however and the latest study on CHD says the rate of improvement in deaths from CHD appears to be beginning to decline and could be reversing among women aged under 50.

Health campaigners say this could be a result of rising obesity and smoking in young women.

Risk factors for CHD include being overweight, having diabetes and a strong family history of heart disease.
