British Liver Trust: Piecemeal action not working

Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:11
The British Liver Trust has called on the government to re-evaluate its strategy of tackling alcohol dependency after new figures showed a steep rise in alcohol-related hospital admissions.

The charity said measures to curb this "worrying trend" were simply not working.

Alison Rogers, British Liver Trust chief executive, explained: "This is set to hit England hard over the following years because liver disease can take up to ten years to develop.

"We need action now to protect people’s health to stop health harm from alcohol spiralling out of control."

Ms Rogers' warning follows the NHS Information Centre revealing the number of hospital admissions where alcohol was the primary or second cause had doubled over the last decade.
