Xtraordinary People: Children slipping through academic net

Friday, 14 Mar 2008 12:31
The charity which commissioned research showing two million children have dyslexia says the government's failure on the issue is "unacceptable and unnecessary".

Xtraordinary People claims one in five school kids has dyslexia or specific learning difficulties (SpLD).

Its founder Kate Griggs is demanding the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) provides more funding for teachers to receive specific and awareness training for dyslexia and SpLD.

"Children are failing now, teachers are crying out for training now – the government needs to rethink and act now to avoid more failure all round," she said.

"The link between dyslexia and academic failure has been made shockingly clear in our report.

"There is simply no need for these children to be slipping through the academic net."
