Men need to be more aware of prostate cancer, survey reveals
Fear and a lack of awareness about the symptoms of prostate cancer are preventing men from seeing their doctor about the disease.

That is according to a new survey, which also found that some men are putting off seeing their GP as they think they would be unable to make an appointment.

According to the ICM poll, conducted for the Prostate Cancer Charity, men are unaware of the main symptoms of prostate cancer.

Twenty-eight per cent of the men surveyed said they thought it was normal for males their age to get up many times in the night to urinate.

More than a fifth were frightened to see their family doctor in case they did have cancer and 16 per cent admitted they were concerned they might need a rectal examination during an appointment.

The Prostate Cancer Charity said it does not want men to panic about getting the disease but called for a greater awareness of the symptoms and male health in general.

Every year nearly 35,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK and 10,000 men die from it.
