PM: Strong message is needed

Thursday, 03 Apr 2008 16:32
A strong message needs to be given to people about the associated ill-effects of cannabis, the prime minister has said.

Cannabis has been an illegal class C drug since January 2004 but in July last year Gordon Brown asked the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs to review whether the drug should be reclassified.

The council is due to present its findings to the home secretary at the end of April 2008 and the government will then decide what its classification will be.

"Given the changing nature of the stock of cannabis that is coming into the country and greater damage that appears to be doing to people who use it, there is a stronger case for sending out a signal that cannabis is not only illegal but it is unacceptable," Mr Brown said. End of story
