No Smoking Day

People are more likely to succeed at quitting if they seek support
Millions of people are being encouraged to kick the habit during No Smoking Day.

About ten million people currently smoke in the UK, increasing their risk of more than 50 different diseases and disorders.

Smoking causes almost 90 per cent of deaths from lung cancer, around 80 per cent of deaths from bronchitis and emphysema and around 17 per cent of deaths from heart disease.

Research has shown that people are more likely to succeed if they seek support when trying to quit.

Now in its 25th year, No Smoking Day aims to support quitters and the 2008 initiative invites smokers to commit to a smokefree week.

Once people have signed up they then receive free quit packs, text messages and emails, which aim to build confidence, highlight health benefits and provide encouragement to go on to make a lifelong commitment.

"If you're ready to quit, there's never been a better time," said No Smoking Day chief executive Dan Tickle.

"Don't forget the free local help that's available; get help from your stop smoking service and you're up to four times more likely to succeed."
