Alan Johnson hopes the review will help improve morale in the NHS
A far-reaching review into the NHS is to be conducted by health minister Professor Ara Darzi.
The announcement from newly-appointed health secretary Alan Johnson comes after arguably the most difficult year for health workers as the NHS became increasingly stretched as the government demanded better fiscal results.
Such pressure resulted in numerous job losses and budget cuts and culminated in former health secretary Patricia Hewitt being heckled by nurses at their annual conference last year.
Mr Johnson said the review, which will be completed by July 2008, offered up the opportunity for a reassessment of spending policies in the NHS.
While the review has been generally welcomed, the government has been urged to make good on its promises.
