Alcohol-related hospital admissions in England have soared over the last decade, it has emerged.
Official statistics have revealed that in 2006/07 alcohol was the primary or secondary cause in 207,800 admissions.
In comparison, in 1995/95 the figure stood at less than half at 93,500.
The NHS Information Centre, which compiled the figures, has warned that alcohol is becoming an increasingly-significant burden upon the health service.
Accompanying data shed further light on the problem by revealing alcohol was the main cause of 57,100 hospital admissions last year, while 6,500 alcohol-related deaths were recorded.
