Eating fruit and vegetables could help to prolong life, study finds
Eating a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruit and vegetables could help people to live longer, researchers claim.

In recent years this type of diet has been linked with healthier lifestyles and a new study appears to confirm this.

Published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, the study is based on the diets of 380,296 people from six US states.

Dr Panagiota Mitrou and colleagues used a nine-point scale to assess conformity with a Mediterranean-style diet.

The diet includes plenty of vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, whole grains and fish.

After five years of follow-up 12,105 participants died, including 5,985 from cancer and 3,451 from cardiovascular disease.

Those who had most closely followed a Mediterranean-style diet were found to be less likely to die of any cause or of cancer or heart disease.
