Johnson: We will deliver more

Monday, 03 Dec 2007 11:48
Health secretary Alan Johnson has pledged that the government's new five-year plan to tackle cancer will help to build a world-class cancer service for the NHS.

Among the elements contained in the Cancer Reform Strategy is an investment of £370 million by 2010 to improve disease prevention, bring about faster treatment and an extended screening programme.

The government has also promised to fast-track drug approval and extended long-term services for cancer patients.

"Today I have pledged that NHS cancer services will do even more for patients," Mr Johnson said at the launch.

"Clinicians, patients and cancer charities tell us that cancer care has improved significantly in the last ten years thanks to investment and reform, but I am determined to go further.

"I want to build world class-cancer services that give NHS patients access to top quality treatment at every stage."
As part of the strategy, a consultation will be launched to canvass opinions on banning tobacco sales from vending machines and to re-examine the packaging on cigarettes.

The government will also review the evidence about the cancer risk from sunbeds and their use among under-18s.End of story
