HC: Convenient access needed

More convenient access to dentists and GPs is an issue that a modern 21st century health service "really ought to be able to address", the chief executive of the Healthcare Commission has claimed.
Anna Walker said a survey carried out by the health watchdog found that while people have a high regard for primary care services, they "clearly want to be able to see a GP more easily and at more convenient times".
The HC poll questioned 69,000 people about their experience of making appointments with dentists and GPs.
"It is clear that more people want to be able to book [GP] appointments several days ahead and that many want more flexible opening hours. In addition, a significant proportion of patients are not being offered a choice of hospital," Ms Walker said.
"These are issues that a modern 21st century health service really ought to be able to address."
She described access to NHS dental care as a "continuing concern".
"Regular dental treatment is important for maintaining good oral hygiene," Ms Walker explained.
"If a large proportion of people do not receive this treatment regularly, we could be facing a significant national health problem in years to come."
She added that the publication of the survey should help primary care trusts and GPs to address patients' concerns.
