Future of general practice

GPs face changes to the way they work
Larger GP centres and longer opening hours are likely under the government's future vision for general practice.

While the proposals – set out in the Next Stage Review – have been welcomed by some, others have expressed concern that too much burden will be placed on GPs.

The government wants patients to have greater choice of GP practice and for them to be given better information to help them choose.

GPs who provide the most accessible services and best quality care will be given better rewards and they will also be encouraged to develop new services for patients.

The emphasis on improved access to GPs, such as more evening and weekend hours, follows claims that some people were finding it difficult to make an appointment.

New style GP centres, or "care organisations", will also be piloted that will bring together health and social care professionals from a range of organisations.

It is this last proposal that has caused the most controversy, with some raising fears that new, larger centres will replace local GP practices despite government assurances that any changes will supplement existing services.
