Cancerbackup: Effect of cancer is widespread

Thursday, 27 Mar 2008 12:22
A cancer diagnosis can have a more widespread effect than many people realise, according to Cancerbackup.

The charity is concerned that people either diagnosed with cancer or whose partner has been diagnosed may not know where to turn for emotional support.

A recently conducted survey revealed the extent of how cancer can affect a couple, from money worries to problems with sexual relationships.

"People don't know what to expect when they or their partner are diagnosed with cancer and are often shocked by how it affects every aspect of their lives," said Derryn Borley, Cancerbackup head of cancer support services.

"Health professionals should be helping people to understand that what they are going through is normal, by providing them with information on how cancer can affect relationships."

Cancerbackup and the relationship support service Relate have produced a free new leaflet offering advice and signposting to further support. End of story
