Certain parts of a Mediterranean-style diet could boost people's health, Cancer Research UK has said.
The charity described the links between diet and cancer risk as "complex" and said it has been known "for a while that certain elements of the Mediterranean diet may be beneficial to health".
Its comments follow research published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine which said consuming a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains and fish could increase the chances of living a long life.
"This study confirms that a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in red and processed meats is associated with a moderate reduction in the overall risk for dying from cancer," said Cancer Research UK's Professor Tim Key.
"More research is needed to determine whether certain aspects of this type of diet have specific effects on particular types of cancer."
