Cancer Reform Strategy

Monday, 03 Dec 2007 09:53
The government plans to improve long-term cancer care as part of the reforms
As part of its new strategy to tackle cancer, the government has pledged to introduce a world-class system of care over the next five years.

Health secretary Alan Johnson announced plans to reform the cancer services available in the UK today, following on from pledges made at the annual Labour conference.

A new emphasis on preventative measures, as well as better long-term care provision for sufferers, was unveiled as part of the plans.

The availability of support services for cancer patients will be boosted, while there is also a promise to increase investment in equipment, specifically for radiation and screening services.

Cancer charities have welcomed the strategy but called on the government to make good on its promises.

The Conservatives have accused the Brown administration of effectively admitting their failure to deal with cancer by unveiling the plans.

Health secretary Alan Johnson dismissed such claims, emphasising that policies undertaken by the government have already achieved results.

He said banning smoking in public places this summer and raising the minimum age for buying cigarettes from 16 to 18 were already operating effectively as part of the government's long-term strategy.
