Alcohol Concern: Glass sizes confuse issue

Monday, 19 May 2008 12:59
A wide range of drinks and serving sizes has made it harder for people to know how many units are in alcoholic drinks, according to Alcohol Concern.

The agency's comments follow a survey by YouGov that found widespread ignorance about the number of units in different drinks.

To counter the lack of unit knowledge the Department of Health has launched its biggest alcohol awareness campaign to date.

Alcohol Concern chief executive Don Shenker said the agency is "delighted to support" the new campaign.

"It marks a fundamental step forward in the effort to reduce risky drinking," he explained.

"Most people want to drink at safe levels. However their task has been made more complicated by the wide range of drinks and serving sizes on the market that render the old rules of thumb unreliable."

Mr Shenker added: "Greater alcohol unit literacy will enable individuals to make more informed, healthier choices about how much they drink at a time when 'lifestyle' consciousness has never been higher."
