Marge's sister in Simpsons gay marriage

Tuesday, 22 Feb 2005 12:05
Marge's sister Patty Bouvier is set to wed another woman in a new Simpsons episode
After weeks of speculation Marge Simpson's sister Patty Bouvier has been revealed as the Simpsons character involved in a gay wedding.

While marriages are not rare amongst Marge's sisters, this time it is not Selma Bouvier-Terwilliger-Hutz-McClure as the bride, but Patty.

Patty, the one in the pinkish dress, was previously known on the show as rather restrained, with only a brief fling with Principal Skinner to her name in 16 series of the cartoon.

Speculation mounted over the last few weeks, after show bosses revealed that fans of the series would soon see a gay wedding.

Many expected the character in question to be Mr Burns' attentive Malibu-Stacy collecting number two Waylon Smithers, but the show ran in the US and revealed that Patty had come out of the closet to marry her girlfriend Veronica.

And, true to form, Homer Simpson does not let an opportunity to get in on the action pass him by and acts as the internet minister for his sister-in-law to make some extra cash.

Having her sister come out is a surprise to Marge, but Homer is left unfazed.

"Yeah, big surprise," he said. "Hey, Marge, here's another bomb: I like beer!"

The episode There's Something About Marrying will be seen in Britain in May and has run with a parental advisory in the US.

At a time when the legalising of gay marriage is an important subject in the US, the episode sees the Simpsons' hometown of Springfield license same-sex matrimony.
