Retired Henin 'will never go back to tennis'

Thursday, 15 May 2008 08:29
Justine Henin says she had considered retirement "for a long time"
Former world number one Justine Henin has claimed she will never return to professional tennis after spectacularly quitting the game yesterday.

The Belgian made the shock announcement at the age of just 25, and a mere 12 days before she was due to begin her quest to win a fourth consecutive French Open title.

Henin won 41 WTA titles throughout a star-studded career, although she has recently complained of feeling "old" because of the rigours of the professional tour.

And she claimed yesterday's announcement was not a spur of the moment decision, but rather one she had been considering for several months.

"It's the end of a wonderful adventure but it's something I have been thinking about for a long time," she said.

"I'm at the end of the road. This is the end of a child's dream.

"I have experienced everything I could have. I have lived completely for tennis but I am now relieved and proud of what I achieved in my career."

Henin won seven grand slam titles, including a total of four French Opens, two US Opens and one Australian Open.

She was twice a finalist at Wimbledon in 2001 and 2006 but it remains the only major tournament she failed to win.

However, she added: "A new future lies ahead of me and I won't go back on this decision."End of story
