Roger Federer beat Guillermo Canas in straight sets
World number one Roger Federer defeated Guillermo Canas in straight sets to book his place in the third round of the Rome Masters.

Federer won 6-3 6-3 to see off the challenge of Canas who had twice beaten him last year.

The Swiss star joins Andy Roddick in the next round after the American beat Mardy Fish 6-1 6-4 in his first appearance of the clay season.

Federer's impressive performance saw him save just one break point in the second set after breaking Canas once in the first.

He went on to break him twice in the second to ensure victory.

"I'm again back in my stride and feel like I'm playing well and nothing ever happened - it was a tough couple of months early on," he said after the match.

"I played well. I felt I was in the groove right away again from Monaco. It was a good match to start off the Rome campaign and I hope I can move on from here," he said.

Roddick was also feeling in good shape following his victory and said he enjoys "the challenge of clay".

"It's probably my toughest surface so that makes the wins that I do get much more satisfying," he said.
