Murray faces a tough match against Nadal in the next round
Andy Murray continued to show signs of improvement on clay when he beat Gilles Simon 6-3 6-3 at the Hamburg Masters.

The Scot will now face Rafael Nadal in the third round, though the Spaniard is likely to prove a considerable step up in class compared to Simon who was on the back foot for most of today's match.

Murray broke in the first game of the match, a superb lob helping to set up break point, and the 20-year-old went on to break serve again to claim a 4-1 lead.

Simon managed to stem the tide midway through the set, holding serve and then going on to break Murray for the first time, but the world number 14 then won the next two games to claim the first set 6-3.

Murray continued his good form at the start of the second set and Simon had to produce some excellent shots of his own just to keep pace with the Briton.

However, Murray claimed a crucial break at 4-4 in the second set and was able to set up the chance to serve for the match.

Simon battled hard and earned three break-back points, but Murray would not be denied and managed to complete the victory once the game went beyond deuce.

Afterwards Murray said he was pleased to have overcome a tricky opponent.

He said: "It was a very good win. He's beaten a lot of top guys on clay and is a very tough clay-court player. I was happy to finish it off so professionally."

Murray will face Nadal in the next round after the Spaniard beat Italy's Potito Starace 6-4 7-6 (8-6).End of story
