Djokovic survives scare to triumph over Wawrinka in Rome

Sunday, 11 May 2008 19:52
The French Open starts on May 26th
Novac Djokovic fought back from a set down to beat unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6 6-3 6-3 to win the Rome Masters.

With a fortnight to go until the French Open, the world number three sealed his tenth career title.

But Wawrinka threatened an upset after breaking the Serb in game five on his way to taking the opening set.

Djokovic won the second set with a single break of serve after a host of unforced errors from his Swiss opponent.

Wawrinka suffered a lower back injury at 2-3 and a break down in the final set, and called the trainer.

He shook off the injury but was broken again as Djokovic sealed his third title of the year in just over two hours.

Djokovic said he was expecting a tough match because of Wawrinka's results on clay.

"In the end I did what I had to do. Even though I won in three sets, I'm happy in general with my performance in this tournament," the 20-year-old said.

"I was aiming for Rome and Roland Garros as my two priorities in this claycourt season. But of course Hamburg is next week, so I'll try to do my best there.

"This year has been like a dream for me, but I want to continue, I want to finish the year as the number one in the race."

Wawrinka, who will move into the top ten when the rankings are released tomorrow, said he was pleased with the start he made.

"I started very well. In the first set I was always before him. I was pushing him," the Swiss number two said.

"Of course I'm disappointed because I lost, but I lost against the world number three."
