Elena Dementieva beat world number two Ana Ivanovic in straight sets in yesterday's semi-final
Dinara Safina fought back from a set down to beat Elena Dementieva 3-6 6-2 6-2 to win the German Open.

Safina came out on top in the battle of the Russians to clinch the sixth title of her career.

The 13th seed, who has beaten Serena Williams and Justine Henin en route to the final, made an erratic start in the opening set and was broken three times.

It was the third time that Safina had gone a set down in Berlin this week, and the fiery Russian showed her frustration by smashing her racket to the ground after going 4-2 behind.

But the 22-year-old found her rhythm in the second set and broke Dementieva twice, sealing the set with an ace down the middle

In the decider, Safina broke again twice and sealed victory on her first matchpoint when Dementieva netted with a backhand.

Safina dedicated the victory to her Mum as today is Mother's Day in Germany.

"My mother can buy anything she wants. She can walk into any store and I will pay for it," the world number 17 said.

The win for Safina sees her move up to 14th place in the WTA rankings while Dementieva, 26, climbs to seventh place. End of story
