Home favourite Williams books place in third round

Reigning champion Serena Williams cruised through to the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open after beating Edina Gallovits 6-1 6-2 in Miami.

The American eighth seed raced into a 5-0 lead before Gallovits held serve for the only time in the opening set.

World number 62 Gallovits twice held serve in the second but never had a break point chance, as Williams sealed victory to remain on course to win the Open in Miami for a fifth time.

The 26-year-old said being the champion gives her a confidence boost.

"I love having all my friends come and see me play and my family always come to this event. I think any time you play at home you always have that extra oomph," Williams said.

"I more or less feel like I'm coming here trying to win the title," she said. "It definitely erases any kind of pressure.

"It wasn't too tough a match but it was a good match to play," said the eight-times grand slam champion."

Meanwhile, Justin Henin booked her place in the third round after defeating Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-2.

World number 80 Kerber led 2-0 in the opening set before Belgian Henin reeled off four games in a row to wrestle back control. The world number one hammered ten aces on her way to victory after breaking her opponent twice in the second set.

Henin, who missed last week's Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells to have extra practise, said she has been working on her serve.

"But I also had to spend a lot of time in the gym and really work hard, trying to get confidence back and my strength," Henin said.

"I haven't played for a few weeks but I feel much better than I did a few weeks ago."

Elsewhere, third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova overcame Yung-Jan Chan of Taipei 6-1 3-6 6-0.End of story
