Henin announces immediate retirement from tennis

World number one Justine Henin 'to retire from tennis'
World number one Justine Henin has announced her retirement from professional tennis with immediate effect.

The news follows speculation earlier today from Belgian daily newspaper De Standaard, which claimed the 25-year-old would quit less than two weeks before the French Open - where she was due to defend her title.

Henin has been champion at Roland Garros for the last three years in succession and is a seven-time grand slam winner.

She has four French titles, two US Opens and one Australian Open, although she has never won at Wimbledon despite being a two-time finalist in 2001 and 2006.

The Belgian's record this year has been patchy, with tournament wins in Sydney and her home event in Antwerp earlier in the season but quarter-final exits from the Australian Open and the Dubai and Miami tournaments.

Most recently she lost to Dinara Safina in the last 16 of the Berlin Open.

And Henin's constant struggles with injury and fitness have apparently taken their toll, meaning she will retire from the game in order to concentrate on other interests.

Henin also took a brief break from professional tennis in January 2007 to deal with the break-up of her marriage, but returned to the WTA Tour the following month.End of story
