History
Manchester United were formed as Newton Heath in the 1870s and became the first English club to lift the then European Cup when they defeated Benfica in 1968.

The victory was the culmination of legendary manager Sir Matt Busby recreating a side after the tragedy of the Munich air disaster of 1958. Featuring surviving members Sir Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes, along with superstar-to-be George Best and Brian Kidd among others, United triumphed 4-2 in a famous final played at Wembley. The club have since won the trophy once more, albeit in the Champions League format, as the third trophy in their unique and historic treble season of 1999, when the club also won the FA Cup and the Premiership.

Their 2006/07 league title was their 16th top division victory and their ninth since the formation of the Premiership in 1992-93. Their FA Cup dominance has seen them chalk up an unmatched 11 wins. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been known for the success he has had with bringing young players through the club, with names such as Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville all coming through the ranks and helping the club achieve greatness.
