History

When Eggert Magnusson took control of West Ham in November last year he spoke of the club's huge potential and proud traditions. During more than 100 years of history, the Academy of Football has produced World Cup winners and England internationals and given some of the brightest young players in the country their debuts.

The club's commitment to home-grown talent and expansive, attacking football is something all West Ham fans are rightly proud of, but for a club their size West Ham have won too few trophies and spent too much time either outside the top flight or fighting to stay in it.

In recent years, supporters have seen ageing foreign stars and precocious ability during the exciting but chaotic Harry Redknapp era, relegation meltdown under Glenn Roeder and short-lived redemption under Alan Pardew.

Hammers fans will be hoping that after the trials and tribulations of the rollercoaster 2006/07 season, Magnusson can bring some stability and financial clout and finally deliver the success the club's loyal supporters deserve.
