History

The club was formed in 1892 when Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End merged, and the club have played at St James' Park ever since.

League titles in 1905, 1907 and 1909 soon followed, along with appearances in five FA Cup finals over the same period. Intermittent success followed in the pre and post-World War II years, reaching a high point in the 1950s as Jackie Milburn helped the club to three FA Cup wins.

Brief forays into Europe and the rise of other star strikers such as Malcolm Macdonald kept things ticking along until the early 1980s, when Kevin Keegan was needed to rescue the club from the old Second Division.

Keegan did the same thing in 1992, this time as manager, and along with Sir John Hall's millions turned Newcastle into everyone's favourite 'other' team and a genuine threat in the Premier League. But even the signing of Alan Shearer for a then-world record £15 million in 1996 could not stop the club from falling at the final hurdle. Since Keegan left in 1997 it's been more of a case of falling at the first hurdle, with the club gradually settling into its new role as everyone's favourite laughing stock.
