Injured Pierce pulls out of Wimbledon
Mary Pierce has joined the growing list of players forced to withdraw from this years Wimbledon due to injury.
The 31-year old has failed to recover in time from a foot injury which also forced her to miss the French Open.
Pierce, who reached the quarter-finals at SW19 in 1999 and 2005, has been struggling with tendonitis in her right foot since February.
The Frenchwoman joins 1999 Wimbledon champion Lindsay Davenport and last years winner Serena Williams who have also withdrawn from this year's championships through injury.
Davenport, 30, has been sidelined with a back injury since March and was also forced to sit out the French Open at Roland Garros.
The American had been determined to recover in time to compete in the season's third major but has now informed Wimbledon chiefs that she will be unable to take part.
And Williams, a two-time Wimbledon winner, pulled out last month due to a catalogue of problems that have seen her slip out the world's top 100.
Meanwhile, Carlos Moya yesterday added to the male withdrawals from this year's event because of a shoulder injury.
He joins a number of stars from the men's draw on the absentee list including Guillermo Coria, Igor Andreev and Taylor Dent.
