Wing Abendanon doubtful for autumn internationals

Nick Abendanon released from England squad due to injured toe
Bath winger Nick Abendanon is a major doubt for England's four autumn international Test matches in November after being told he must rest for up to four weeks.

Abendanon was diagnosed with an injury to the joint of his left big toe after reporting for England training camp at the weekend.

The injury, which kept the 22-year-old out of Bath's EDF Energy Cup win over Sale Sharks last Friday, does not require surgery but the player has been told he must rest for between two and four weeks to allow it to heal completely.

"Nick returned to his club last night and will be treated by the Bath Rugby medical team," the Rugby Football Union (RFU) confirmed.

"The England medics will remain in close contact with the club and player."

Despite the loss of Abendanon, who was expected to at least make the replacements bench for the opening autumn international against the Pacific Islands next Saturday after a solid start to the season, England officials have said there are "no plans" to call up a replacement.

It has also been confirmed by the RFU that Leicester Tigers hooker George Chuter was returned to his club because of injury.

Chuter was one of eight players, including Gloucester's Olly Barkley and Wasps' Josh Lewsey, to be given the all clear to return to club duty this weekend - suggesting they are unlikely to play a part for England's match on November 8th.

However, it has emerged that the 32-year-old twisted his left knee in training on Tuesday and suffered a mild ligament strain, meaning he will not be fit to play this weekend.
