Guinness Premiership side Leicester Tigers have unveiled plans for a new four-star hotel development to be built at the site of their Welford Road stadium.
The project, which will cost around £100 million, will also include facilities for the local hospital and university at the site of the former Granby Halls and Fosse Day Centre sites behind the Caterpillar stand.
This side of the ground is currently undergoing a development of its own, with construction underway on a capacity increase to take the overall seating numbers up from 17,500 to 24,000.
Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom said: "We have worked closely with the UHL (University Hospital of Leicester) and the university to ensure their respective needs are satisfied, and we are in detailed discussions with several quality hotel operators who see this as an ideal opportunity to move into Leicester.
"This is an exciting and prestigious development bringing together three of the city's major organisations - the UHL, the University of Leicester and Tigers.
"In preparing the planning application we have taken fully on board the development brief from the city council and believe the scheme will truly enhance the area and give Leicester another landmark development to be proud of."
