Leicester Tigers have been given planning permission to start work on a £100 million redevelopment of Welford Road and its surrounding area.
The first stage of the work will see the completion and opening of the new Caterpillar Stand at Welford Road for the start of next season, which will see the capacity of the ground increase to 24,000.
The ambitious project will also see a four-star hotel being built adjacent to Welford Road and also new facilities being built at University Hospitals of Leicester and the University of Leicester, as well as multi-storey car park.
"We think the plans are innovative and exciting," said Leicester Tigers managing director David Clayton.
" We have worked closely with our neighbours to help meet the requirements of the University Hospitals of Leicester, the Leicester University and Leicester College as well as providing a hotel to serve the city centre.
"The benefits will permeate through the whole community and will also allow Leicester Tigers to continue to develop.
"We believe the scheme will enhance this area of the city and give Leicester another eye-catching landmark development."
