St Helens have been hit with the news that star player Sean Long will be out for two months after suffering a broken jaw.
The 32-year-old suffered the injury when he was on the receiving end of a nasty tackle from Mark Henry in his side's surprise 20-10 defeat to Salford in Super League last night.
Long will have an operation on Monday and St Helens hope he will be back in time to lead their charge for the Super League title. The former man-of-steel has an outside chance of playing in the Challenge Cup final on August 29, should the Saints beat Huddersfield in the semis.
It was feared that Long may have played his last game for the Saints immediately after he had suffered the injury as he is off to Hull FC at the end of the season. But luckily the injury is not as bad as first thought and he will have the chance to end his St Helens career on a high.
Long has been one of the most important players at St Helens since he signed for the club in 1997. The scrum-half has played 294 games for the Saints and scored a club record 2510 points.
The veteran star has won three Super League titles and a remarkable five Challenge Cups with Saint Helens. Long has also been awarded the Lance Todd trophy on three occasions, which is given to the man-of-the-match in the Challenge Cup final.
