Manchester United have begun talks to sign Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna after missing out on Patrick Vieira and Javier Mascherano.
The 30-year-old Spanish international is poised to make a £4 million switch to Old Trafford where he will form a newlook United midfield alongside £18.9 signing Michael Carrick.
Sir Alex Ferguson had been hoping to sign former Arsenal skipper Vieira but he completed a £6.5 million move from Juventus to Inter Milan this morning while Argentine star Mascherano has vowed to remain at Corinthians.
This has paved the way for Senna to swap El Madrigal for Manchester and he has said today he is hopeful his future can be resolved quickly.
"I know they are negotiating a transfer and I hope they sort things out as soon as possible, so I know what my future will be," he said.
"To be honest, Villarreal opened their doors for me and I am very happy here.
"The club have signed some good new players and I have always said my ambition is to win a title with this club. This season would be a great chance to do that. But we will see."
Senna is a tough-tackling midfielder and is viewed as the ideal replacement for former United captain Roy Keane.
