Major League Soccer (MLS) star Freddy Adu appears to be on his way to Manchester United for a two-week trial despite the Old Trafford club earlier denying the wheels of any such move were in motion.
Sir Alex Ferguson is said to be keen on the 17-year-old forward, long billed as one of the most talented prospects in world football, and Sky Sports News claim the United boss has now confirmed he will be taking a closer look at the American teenager next week.
The news comes just hours after United issued a statement rejecting comments in the Washington Post which claimed the two-week trial had been arranged.
"Freddy Adu will not be attending a trial with Manchester United as has been reported on both sides of the Atlantic," the statement said.
"The reports contradict statements released last season in which United expressly pointed out that Adu was not a player they are currently interested in. Despite the recent bout of speculation, United's stance has not changed and Adu will not be attending a trial."
Adu has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, Real Madrid and United over the past few years but current regulations stipulate that players younger than 18 cannot be sold internationally.
This reported two-week trial at United could act as a precursor for a summer move for Adu, who turns 18 in June.
"I still don't know the details, but if it happens, it will be exciting," Adu, who currently has three years left of a DC United contract, told the Washington Post.
Further shrouding controversy, Dave Kasper, DC United technical director, added: "This is something Freddy has wanted to do and we completely support him. It will be a good experience for him.
"It's basically a training opportunity like the ones we've given our players in the past. We hope Freddy benefits from it and comes back an even better player."
MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis also revealed: "We have a good relationship with Manchester United and the opportunity for Freddy to train there made sense for DC United, Freddy and the league."
