Liverpool are set to unveil plans for Britain's biggest football stadium.

Owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett will submit a new design to the local council later this month which would see the current 60,000-capacity plans expanded to a new stadium accommodating 80,000 people.

The American billionaires hope to move to the new £250 million stadium at Stanley Park in 2009.

Hicks admitted the new plans could see Liverpool's new home dwarf the 76,000 capacity at Old Trafford, the home of bitter rivals Manchester United.

"The city council's planners will receive the final plans on July 25th," Hicks told the Sunday Mirror newspaper.

"The initial capacity will be the 60,000 previously approved, but the design will accommodate an eventual capacity in the high 70s."

Hicks ordered a review of the club's plans for a new stadium soon after gaining control at Anfield alongside Gillett in February.

American architects drew up the revised plans which will be sent to planning officers at the council offices at Millennium House.

The site at Stanley Park is just 300 yards away from Anfield, which has been the Reds' home for 114 years.

The stadium will include facilities for education, sport and community activities along with a fully restored Stanley Park.

Liverpool received the go-ahead for the project from the city council for the initial 60,000 stadium in September last year.
