The most famous trophy in club football, the FA Cup, has been forced to undergo emergency repairs after it was damaged during Chelsea's celebrations last month.
The silver spike that sits on top of the lid of the trophy was accidentally snapped off by a member of the club as the players, coaches and officials celebrated picking up their second trophy of the 2006/07 season in May.
Chelsea beat Premiership title-winners Manchester United in the showpiece final – the first at the new Wembley Stadium – three months after their victory over Arsenal in the Carling Cup final.
But the club have been left embarrassed after reports emerged that they had neglected to look after the instantly-recognisable FA Cup trophy.
"The lid of the FA Cup was broken accidentally during celebrations and is being fixed to prevent further damage," a Chelsea spokesperson said.
The cup has been sent to the Football Association's specialist silversmith in Birmingham to undergo repair.
However the club has continued to allow supporters to have their photograph taken alongside the two trophies – albeit without a lid on the FA Cup.
