Veteran British boxer Gilbert Eastman is in intensive care after having an operation to remove a blood clot in his brain.
The 35-year-old fought Sam Webb in Bethnal Green on Friday night and was stopped in the eighth round. Eastman left the ring okay and walked to the changing rooms where he collapsed and was rushed to the Royal London Hospital.
"It was a small blood vessel leaking into the brain," said Eastman's trainer Winston Fuller. "Gilbert didn't collapse in the ring, he walked under his own steam to the dressing room.
"Half-way through changing his clothes he was talking to us and then just collapsed. They (medics) put a neck collar on him because he hit his neck when he fell back onto the ropes. But the doctors said there was no damage.
"I left the hospital at around 4.30am, I'm going back there later today (Saturday). His wife and family are with him, they were at the show."
Light-middleweight Eastman is the older brother of Howard Eastman, the British middleweight who has twice fought for world titles. Gilbert is a fine boxer in his own right, holding a record of 20 wins and seven losses from his 27 professional fights.
