Joey Barton was on the score-sheet as Newcastle edged their way to a 2-1 victory over West Brom at St James' Park.
The win sees Joe Kinnear's side move out of the bottom three and is also his first victory since his controversial appointment as interim manager.
Barton opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 10th minute after Shola Ameobi had been felled inside the area by Ditch defender Ryan Donk.
The troubled midfielder sent Scott Carson the wrong way for a goal on his first start since being released from prison and serving a lengthy suspension.
Though West Brom had plenty of possession, they rarely posed a threat and Newcastle were the more dominant side but were often let down by a poor final ball.
James Morrison should have equalised but Shay Given made a brilliant stop from the Scottish international after some smart build-up play.
West Brom were made to pay when Obafemi Martins doubled the home side's advantage with a deflected header just before the interval.
West Brom came out firing in the second-half but were clearly lacking the cutting edge in the final third to match their precise approach play.
Substitute Ishmael Miller pulled one back for Tony Mobray's men when he latched onto a clever Robert Koren pass and rounded Given to slot home.
Miller then nearly equalised from a tight angle but Given was equal to his effort.
Newcastle held on for victory, their second of the season and first since they defeated Bolton at St James' Park on August 23rd.
