Phil Davies parts company with Llanelli Scarlets
Magners League side Llanelli Scarlets have sacked director of rugby Phil Davies after an underwhelming domestic and European season.

The region is limping towards a midtable domestic finish and suffered six defeats out of six in their Heineken Cup pool matches.

And after conducting a review of the season, the Scarlets board decided to cancel Davies' contract.

In a statement, the club said: "The decision made by the board was discussed at a meeting between Phil Davies and the chairman of the board in Llanelli.

"Coaching staff, players and commercial staff have all been informed of the decision at a series of briefing meetings with senior officials.

"The club will be in ongoing discussions with Phil to reach agreement on his departure during the contractual notice period which runs until the end of May 2008."

Davies' representatives are currently in talks with the club over a severance package, although his release comes as something of a shock.

Just six months ago, the 44-year-old was being considered for the head coaching role with the Welsh national team - a job that was eventually given to Warren Gatland.

The statement added: "The board would like to make it clear that this has been a difficult decision to make and one that is disappointing for all parties concerned."

Following Davies' departure, Paul Moriarty will be responsible for team matters with the Scarlets with support from Robert Jones and Wayne Proctor.

It remains unclear when a full-time replacement for Davies will be named.End of story
