Wakefield put nine tries past Castleford in Cardiff

Sunday, 04 May 2008 09:58
Brough kicked 18 points against his former side
Wakefield put themselves firmly in playoff contention with an emphatic 54-16 win over bottom-of-the-table Castleford at the Millennium Stadium.

Scott Grix scored a hat-trick and there was also a brace of tries in the second half for team-mate Damien Blanch.

Former Tigers player Danny Brough was the mastermind behind the Wildcats' win, kicking 18 points as well as guiding the attacking play of his new side.

Wakefield started the game at a furious pace and the Tigers could not cope with wave after wave of Wildcats attacks.

Tries from Adam Watene, Sam Obst, Grix and Richard Moore gave Wakefield a 24-0 lead with just 22 minutes on the clock.

Castleford finally got on the scoreboard when Richard Owen crossed the whitewash but the Tigers were still 24-6 behind at the break.

The second half was equally one-sided as the Wildcats refused to relent against weak opposition.

Grix claimed his second try of the game five minutes after the resumption after Brough's kick had rebounded off the post.

Joe Westerman scored for Castleford before Blanch touched down for Wakefield. Michael Shenton showed that the Tigers still had some fight left in them as the sides continued to trade scores only for the Wildcats to pull away again.

Tries by Blanch, Grix and Ryan Atkins finished the Tigers off. Wakefield are now level with St Helens, Bradford, Warrington and Wigan on 14 points.End of story
