Wes Brown agrees new contract with Manchester United
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the club have agreed new contracts with Wes Brown, Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand.
At his press conference this afternoon, Ferguson told the gathered reporters that he had spoken to the club's chief executive David Gill earlier in the day, when he had been informed of the new deals.
There had been speculation throughout the season that Brown in particular would be leaving the club in the summer when his existing contract was set to expire.
The England international had been the subject of a transfer bid from
Newcastle United in January, although Ferguson rejected the approach and today he revealed he was "always quietly confident he would sign".
"There's no other club for Wes Brown," the manager stated.
"He's a Manchester United player."
Ferdinand had also been rumoured to be eyeing up a move to the continent to finish his career abroad, perhaps in Italy or Spain.
But earlier this week his agent, Pini Zahavi, revealed the two parties were close to an agreement - a rumour that Ferdinand and Ferguson both corroborated in the following days.
Carrick, who signed for United from
Tottenham Hotspur in an £18.6 million deal in 2006, is also poised to sign a new contract, according to the manager.
