Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has undergone surgery on cuts to his face after the club reported he had been involved in a "training ground accident".
The shot-stopper has been out of action for the last nine matches due to an ongoing ankle injury, and was looking likely to regain his place in goal after his absence this week.
However, reports suggest the Czech international collided with another playing during a routine training drill and suffered deep cuts, meaning surgery was the best option available to the Blues.
A statement from the club on Monday read: "Petr Cech underwent surgery yesterday following a training ground accident which left him with lacerations to his lip and chin.
"Petr will begin his rehabilitation immediately and we hope to have him back playing as soon as possible."
Cech missed the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Fenerbahce in Turkey, which Avram Grant's men lost 2-1 despite completely dominating the first half.
Carlo Cudicini is expected to continue deputising for Cech in goal for the west London side, who, in addition to Europe's top club competition, are also entering the home straight in their battle with
Manchester United to regain the Premier League title.
