Essex need 248 more runs to beat New Zealand after day three of the tour match at Chelmsford.

The home side were 45-1 at the close, chasing the Black Caps' modest target of 293.

Earlier, Essex lost their last wicket to finish on 258 in their first innings, Ravi Bopara top-scored with 66 which included nine boundaries.

In swinging conditions, Essex skittled out the Kiwis for just 195 in their second innings.

With Daniel Vettori unable to bat due to injury, the tourists struggled and had Kyle Mills to thank after his unbeaten 53.

Mills had some support from wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum, who made 35, while Aaron Redmond hit 35 off 106 balls.

They were the only three batsman who went past 20, with Maurice Chambers doing the most damage with 3-37.

Bopara, Alex Tudor, and Tony Palladino took two wickets apiece as New Zealand were bowled out in 67.4 overs.

In reply, Essex lost Jason Gallian for 22 after he edged to slip off the bowling off Iain O'Brien with the last ball of the day.

Alastair Cook remains at the crease on 21 and will be looking for a big score ahead of England's first Test against the Black Caps on May 15th at Lords.End of story
