Andy Murray fuming over opponent's mother remarks

Andy Murray says Juan Del Petro made insulting remarks about his mother
Andy Murray has criticised his opponent Juan Martin Del Potro for alleged remarks about his mother during their Rome Masters first-round clash.

In a contentious match in which the Scot was rebuked for foul language, Murray won through to the second round after his Argentinean rival was forced to retire in the third set with a back injury.

But the British number one has said his progression in the tournament was marred by Del Petro's comments about his mother, Judy Murray, who was watching in the stands.

"I will accept lots of things, but not when someone insults my mum, the nicest person in the world," he told the Times newspaper.

Murray lost the first set 7-5, after his warning from the umpire for an audible obscenity, having been broken three times.

The rain-hit contest soon turned in Murray's favour, with his increased composition and ire at his opponent's purported insults powering the Briton to a comfortable 6-4 win in the second set.

And after Murray broke Del Porto for a third consecutive game as the deciding set began, the Argentine was forced to call for his trainer having sustained a back injury while reaching for a drop shot.

With his eyes swollen with tears, the 19-year-old withdrew from the contest after five minutes of treatment, sending Murray through.

The Scottish star will play Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round, after the Swiss defeated Marat Safin 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-1.
