Bath have announced the signing of centre or wing Matt Carraro from New South Wales Waratahs ahead of the new Guinness Premiership season.

The versatile 24-year-old joins the club on a two-year deal, just months after helping his old team reach the final of the Super 14 in 2008.

Carraro, who has won Australia A honours, said he is "very excited" at the prospect of joining Bath, saying they are an outfit he believes can achieve great things.

"The club has a great reputation in the southern hemisphere and all over the world people love Bath the city," he said.

"The squad looks great and I am looking forward to playing with them and to developing my game under [head coach] Steve Meehan and the other coaches.

"I am really looking forward to the challenge of week-in-week-out rugby, and playing in the Guinness Premiership and in the Heineken Cup against the best players in England and in Europe."

Meehan himself believes Carraro will fit in well at the Rec, adding to the not insignificant signings of Luke Watson, Julian Salvi, Ben Skirving, Davey Wilson and Olly Barkley already this summer.

"Matt's rugby skills and size will suit us well and we are very pleased that he wants to progress his rugby here at Bath," the coach said.

"He has a reputation as a hard worker and good bloke off the field and these are the first ingredients we are looking for.

"Being able to play in either centre position or on the wing provides us with great flexibility and, with the added bonus of goal kicking, I am sure he will get plenty of rugby."
