Russia came back from a terrible start in the rhymthic gymnastics to beat the hosts China, who had to settle for silver after finishing less than half a point behind.
The Russian group had made a series of horrible mistakes on the first day of qualifications but were on top of the scoreboard after the first round, which saw five ropes used.
Their folk-based routine impressed the judges and they were able to secure the gold with the follow-up, using two clubs and three hoops.
China finished on 35.225 points to Russia's 35.550, while Belarus the top qualifiers for the contest were third.
