Javelin win for Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway
Andreas Thorkildsen mounted a successful defence of his Athens 2004 javelin gold, winning a second Olympic gold with an unbeaten fifth throw of 90.54m.
His third throw of 87.93m proved a tough act to follow for his competitors and would not be matched by any rivals. Thorkildsen secured gold with an increase on that throw.
The tussle for silver was much closer. Ainars Kovals of Latvia emerged triumphant with a sixth throw of 86.64m.
Finland's Tero Pitkamamki was 0.53m behind that with his sixth effort, giving him bronze.
