Hungary supreme in water polo final

Sunday, 24 Aug 2008 11:50
Hungary take third consecutive water polo Olympic gold
Hungary took the penultimate gold of the Beijing Games, beating the US 14-10 for their third consecutive Olympic triumph.

The victory was only assured in the second half of the game as Layne Beaubien managed to equalise the scores 9-9 early in the third quarter.

Going into the final period Hungary led 11-9. From there they opened up a five-point lead to secure the win, with only Jesse Smith providing an answer from the Americans.

The win means Hungary become the first ever country to win three consecutive golds in Olympic water polo. Six players, including captain Tibor Benedek, as well as coach Denes Kemeny have been with the team for all three wins.

The latter celebrated the win by jumping, fully clothed, into the pool to be with his players.
