Adebayor starts quest for redemption with winning goal

Sunday, 03 Aug 2008 20:35
Emmanuel Adebayor scored 30 goals last season.
Emmanuel Adebayor scored the winner from the penalty spot as Arsenal beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the Emirates Cup.

The striker, who committed his future to the Gunners on Friday, silenced his critics by scoring a penalty on 49 minutes.

Adebayor was booed by some Arsenal fans over reports last month that he demanded the club quadruple his wages.

The Togo striker was influential throughout and set up an early chance for Theo Walcott who fired wide.

Adebayor then came agonisingly close to scoring the opener when he glanced a header over after a pinpoint cross from new signing Samir Nasri.

The home side's dominance paid off four minutes after the break when Robin van Persie was bundled over by Michel Salgado, with Adebayor slotting his penalty past ex-Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek.

Madrid created few chances of note and had Wesley Sneijder stretchered off with a knee injury after a collision with Abou Diaby.

Adebayor came close to doubling Arsenal's lead with a surging run late on but could not add to his tally.

Earlier, Hamburg won the Emirates Cup after a 3-0 win over Italian giants Juventus.

Martin Jol's side clinched victory thanks to a goal from Jose Guerrero and a brace from Ivica Olic.

Jol's former club Tottenham won the Feyenoord Jubilee Tournament with a 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Darren Bent, Giovanni dos Santos and Jamie O'Hara were on target for Spurs.

Elsewhere, Klaas Jan Huntelaar's second-half strike gave Ajax a 1-0 victory over Sunderland.
