Retief Goosen carded 68 to lead by one stroke at the halfway stage of the BMW International Open in Munich.
The South African's four-under par round leaves him on 12-under-par, to stay ahead of Soren Kjeldsen (65).
Nick Doughtery is a further shot back after he matched the Dane's score to move himself into contention, while Scot David Drysdale is also on ten under.
Englishman Dougherty had two eagles to boost his chances of qualifying for The Open at Turnberry.
There are two places through a mini-Order of Merit with Dougherty currently lying in sixth place.
He said: "I'd love to play, but the best way is to stay in the now and I'm trying to win this."
Thongchai Jaidee (66), Thomas Levet (67) and Danny Willett (68) are grouped together on nine under.
German veteran Bernard Langer is on eight under, while Rory McIlroy (67) is two strokes further back.
Colin Montgomerie just made the cut, but John Daly missed out after finishing on level par.
